The charts in this blog post are based on data covering the full month of September 2013 on a globally aggregated level.
Top Free Apps
In September 2013, YouTube continued the upward trend from August, reaching the number one position in terms of global free downloads in the Apple App Store. The upwards trend was clearly visible in the second half of September with the release of the new iPhone and iOS7. Candy Crush Saga remained on rank number two, while a new title: Deer Hunter 2014 entered the top five on rank number three. The previous top performer: Despicable Me: Minion Rush dropped down on rank four, followed by Facebook on rank five.

For the free charts on Google Play, the month of September just brought one change: Skype – free IM & video calls entered the global top five on rank five, at the expense of Facebook Messenger, while the top four ranks did not change relative to August.

Despicable Me: Minion Rush continued its lead in the Amazon Appstore on rank number one. Looking at the following ranks, the continuous trend of quiz and puzzle games was also visible in the top 5 of September, with Guess what? on rank two and What The Riddle? on rank five. In addition, Baby Care & Baby Hospital – Kids games on rank four represented the success of baby care apps targeted to girls as seen in previous months. The new Rovio game, Angry Birds Star Wars II Free, was only released in the second half of September and reached rank number three, which proves the wide popularity of this game.

Top Paid Apps
Unlike in the free charts, Angry Birds Star Wars II showed its success in the Apple App Store, as the leading app in the global paid charts. The new adventure game by Rovio Entertainment Ltd won over Minecraft – Pocket Edition and Asphalt 8: Airborne in terms of paid downloads, which both moved one rank down from their August position. Another newly released game, Infinity Blade III, entered the top five on rank four, followed by PicPlayPost, which increased its download volumes after a few recent updates.

Even more so as in the free charts, the paid charts of Google Play, did show no changes, compared to August 2013. The top five remained the same, followed closely though by Asphalt 8: Airborne, which raced to global rank six in September 2013.

Minecraft – Pocket Edition remained in the leading position in the Amazon Appstore continously, while the paid version of Angry Birds Star Wars II was also in the Amazon Appstore successful, achieving on rank two. Plants vs. Zombies (Kindle Tablet Edition) had to make room for the “angry birds” and dropped to rank three, still followed by Wreck-It Ralph (Kindle Tablet Edition). After the two Kindle Tablet Edition Games, Survivalcraft re-entered the global top five on rank five.

Top Grossing Apps
When it comes down to revenue, the grossing charts give an overview of who is most prosperous in the global app market. In September, Clash of Clans defended its leading position in the Apple App Store – once again – against its close follower Candy Crush Saga on rank two. Globally, the leading main countries contributing to the revenue for Clash of Clans were still the United States, followed by strong Asian markets, Japan and China. While Candy Crush Saga was stronger in the United States, Clash of Clans bested the puzzle game in revenue from the Asian markets during September. Expanding its triumph, Supercell showed in addition a strong performance with Hay Day on rank three. Gung Ho’s Japanese version of Puzzle & Dragons remained on rank number four in the Apple App Store. In September, also King.com placed its second “Saga” title in the global top five grossing charts: Pet Rescue Saga moved up to rank five.

On Google Play,パズル＆ドラゴンズ(Puzzle & Dragons) re-conquered rank number one, while Candy Crush Saga landed as well on rank two as in the Apple App Store.
In line with the free and paid charts, also the grossing apps were relatively stable on Google Play. LINE Pokopang and LINE: Free Calls & Messages remained unchanged at rank number three and five, respectively.
In contrast, 몬스터 길들이기 for Kakao, which translates to “Taming the Monster”, moved up to rank four in the global grossing charts after being featured in “Trending Apps” in the Korean Google Play store.

Looking at the top grossing apps, two developers, Supercell and King.com Limited, show a remarkable performance, having two titles in the global top 5 grossing charts in the Apple App Store. King.com has, in addition, shown a steady performance with Candy Crush Saga on Google Play. In regards to this, it will be interesting to follow the performance of Supercell’s Clash of Clans, which was just recently released on Google Play.
As in August, the best performing grossing apps were also in September dominated by games, with the communication app LINE: Free Calls & Messages on Google Play as the only exception.
Market Growth in September 2013
Following the previous months, we also looked at the development of the relative market share between the Apple App Store and Google Play*.
In September 2013, the market share distribution did not change compared to August. The Apple App Store is still leading with 65 percent, compared to 35 percent for Google Play. The interesting development behind these numbers is that the growth from Google Play was relative smaller compared to previous months, while the revenue portion of the Apple App Store grew a little stronger. This growth was mainly based on revenue generated through the iPhone, which is likely related to the introduction of iOS7 along with the new iPhone models 5C and 5S. It will be interesting to see, if Apple can increase this growth even further next month.

United Kingdom, United States, and Vietnam. These countries are chosen for this analysis, as revenue is generated for both stores in each country.
